A Terrible Fate

"We were attacked, on our way back
By beasts- wicked and black!
In Forsyth Forest, detached from the pack
It should have been a safe trip home
But happenstance would have us roam
We had no time to double back
It seems that trouble is our knack
My daughter and I were chased away from the group
But we weren't alone- beasts swarmed in troops
My gift held them back, and bought us time to flee
But once I'm drained I see the last thing that I want to see
Silver eyes piercing the dark of a cave
A ghastly grin brings grief rather than grave
The encounter is quick- we barely get away
But not before he hexes me and numbers my days!
This demon known as Silver- evil in breathing form
Our anguish keeps it fed, and our hatred keeps it warm
It curses us to die slow, and feeds on our despair
It longs to be stronger and in our pain we take it there
Yes, Silver the Grand Demon- a force beyond control
But if you could destroy him you would absorb a Grand Soul!
And as you know, with one of those, you get to live again
I can't pay much, but with my gift, I know that you can win!"
Sloan begs Isaac to accept this mission so far turned down
Silver is known and feared in all five Ellurian towns
Isaac wears many scars; he's seen and slain great things
But the reward is low for all the danger that it brings
"I've mauled manic mincers in a misty mine
And killed a crimson croc with sixteen eyes
But Silver is malice that walks and talks"
Isaac concludes "a grudge that stalks"
"Please" Sloan begs, "you can keep the Grand Soul
And when your life fades away, it will fill that hole
My gift will help you fight, and you can have all my gold!
If Silver dies soon then at least I can grow old"
I even begged Garth to spare a few men
But he scoffed and said not to bother him again
Sloan adds that he's the only one that his daughter's got
Isaac knows he'll help now whether he wants to or not
Isaac will help, but has a feeling in his gut
Something is wrong, but he can't figure what
"Nothing’s more important in this world
Than the wellbeing of my little girl"
“I will slay your demon and break your curse
But for better or worse, we seek the psychic first"

Isaac and Sloan are en route to Ghenim
Elluryah's great mage, but before they reached him
Three roughnecks approached with accusing mouths
Shifting Sand thugs from the Kharusurahk desert to the south
Isaac draws his blade with a look in his eyes
That most know best to run from and hide
But the desert dwellers have a trick up their sleeve
Their sights are set and they don't intend to leave
They’ve a small creature in tow
It’s capable of crippling blows
"You may have beaten us before
But we'll take our revenge, and more!
We remove the muzzle, it screams
A shrill cry that will haunt your dreams
You'll seize and shake- you'll be in hell
But we're immune thanks to a spell"
They have the upper hand today
They may take everything away
Until the only thing they lack
Is the huge case Sloan totes on his back
But Sloan would sooner give his life
Than surrender what’s stored inside
The only choice might be to fight
Then find Ghenim under moonlight
With the same fire in his eyes Isaac turns and replies
"These two scars I got from guys in your gang
A couple lucky blows that brought pain all the same
But I overcame eight of your very best
And if they hadn't left, I would have taken the rest!
Yet here you stand- now have you thought this through?
I won't fight now, but I won't forget you
So take our things, but know I'll have them back
And you'll regret your choice if you survive my attack!"
"Don't worry" says Sloan, "they've changed their minds"
He tells them to speak up if they disagree
They're quiet and still- staring off as if blind
"My gift" says Sloan, "is the power to freeze
Once I release them, they'll be just fine
Aside from confused as to where we went
We'll take their gear away in the meantime
With nothing they'll crawl back to from where they were sent"
Left in the streets, half naked and branded
Their pet sent home, the gangsters are stranded
Isaac meets Ghenim, and once all is said
He finally has his destiny read

Elluryah's great mage was once much greater
But one brilliant spell would dwindle that later
Anymore, minor spells are all that he can cast
But his prophetic vision seems to never pass
Ghenim closes his eyes and he opens his mind
Countless branches align, as he sees what hides behind
Light and shadow coalesce as the great mage gains access
To knowledge most could never find
And fewer still could hope to digest

Darkness on the Horizon

Sloan and Isaac set out at first light
Sloan says that he didn't sleep last night
Into Forsyth Forest the duo goes
Isaac has a few things he needs to know, so
He tells Sloan to tell him his tale
"Tell me a bit about yourself"
Sloan looks up and clears his throat
"I'm not sure what you want to know
But my daughter Ellie is my life
I've lost all contact with my wife
We thought we had a lead up north
Just dead ends leading us back and forth
That brings us to the latest verse
You and I travel to the heart of the curse"
"So what's in that case that you won't let anyone touch?
So valuable, yet you can't pay me much?"
"It's value, I'm afraid, lies just in my heart
For you it's of no use; for me a crucial part"
Isaac decides to let that be
Relics of Sloan's wife likely
Is a myth of light within
Even the shadiest of men?
"Where is your daughter? Is she safe?"
"I took her to her uncle's after we escaped"
"And your wife? When did she disappear?"
"I'm sad to say that it's been two years
I hate to leave my Ellie alone
But yes, she'll be safe while I am gone
So I hired a hardened scar collector
All I knew to do to protect her"
"I am truly sorry about your wife
I hope that you can rebuild your life
I hate to pry, but I have to
Ghenim saw something shady in you"
Sloans eyes dart away
"What exactly did he say?"
"He said you're sad but you fight it back
Mostly to spite Silver's attack
Ellie is indeed your main concern
And that's the bulk of what he learned
But why is your magic force waning?
The curse, of course, has your life draining
But spirit grows when we are pressured
Your power should be beyond measure!
He also said that Silver's death
Will offer you closure at best
The hex won't go- the strange part, though
Is the fact that you already know
You claim to have some special plan
He claims the curse will spare no man
It's clear that you've been lying to me
So why is it that I'm not worried?"
Isaac decides to let that be
If nothing else, then for Ellie
Is it a myth of light within
Even the shadiest of men?
Ghenim's spell will keep Isaac free of Silver's curse
It was that or Sloan's gift- clearly Silver is worse
Isaac recounts fights near and far
A fable spelled out in scars

Isaac recounts a fight from several years ago
Against a shady foe, that it seems Sloan may know
A beast of black from deep in the forest
"My steel split it in two- I was not impressed
"This scar on my forearm
Had me quite alarmed
Black swamp creatures cut me
But they failed to gut me
"I have seen some bizarre things here
But nothing that filled me with fear
I've avoided the only thing
Worthy until today it seems"
A white crow flies overhead
Both see, but nothing is said
Somber silence in its stead
Seems Silver is in their heads
He's crept back into their heads
But they must not allow dread
"My wife and Ellie loved to
Visit the beaches of Letchim
Just relax and take in the sun
And of course we would always swim
Colette would pack us lunches
We would spend entire days there
We fed our scraps to the gulls
I remember the wind in her hair
"The way the sun outlined her face
I just- thank you so much
You are the saving grace
"Ellie and me- we are all we've got
You're a hero to us- whether we succeed or not"

Ghenim watches from afar
No magic left now with which to help
But he believes even without spell
Isaac will banish the beast to hell
Just believing is enough to help Isaac win
Ghenim dwells on the thought- repeating it within
Silver must be viewed as just a minor problem
To logic Ghenim must not let his mind succumb

Forest Folly

The air becomes cold- the light all but drowned
The bugs and the birds don't dare make a sound
The bitter breeze reeks of corpses amassed
The Grand Demon Silver is near at long last
He shows his face- glowing eyes and a grin
Sloan must hold his fear and nausea within
Isaac steps up- it's too late to back down
And shouts out, wearing a disgusted frown
"To you we are nothing but canvas for curse
Well I am immune and he's wearing your worst
So your curse is bunk, and the myths are all moot
Now what have you got that's worth my commute!?"
Silver is unscathed, and his grin is unphased
"You couldn't count across all of our hands
How many have stood right there where you stand
And sworn that they would be the death of me
Until their shouts shifted from threats to pleas"
Sloan tells Isaac his magic is drained
"I could have sworn that I'd have enough retained
But with Ghenim's spell you can win- no doubt"
And with that Sloan falls and passes out
Isaac charges, feigns left but leaps right
His blade finds flesh- a successful sleight
Silver counters with a slash to the back
The attack leaves Isaac's armor cracked
They parry one another, blow for blow
It's clear that each has found a fierce foe
But in a split second, with guard neglected
Isaac is downed by a blow fully connected
Silver smashes with a meteor's might
Isaac feels the full force of the smite
"Your protective spell will fade tonight
I might wait it out, just out of spite!"
Having acquired a brand new scar
Isaac reflects on the events thus far
"Could this be how this story ends?
We both die here and the demon wins?
I hate that beast! I want his head
My every fiber wants him dead!
But now I see that all along
I have been completely wrong
With rage burning deep within
I see now I cannot win"
Isaac rises, to Silver's surprise
"Now where is that fire in your eyes?
How pathetic- you've given in
Any second now the pleading begins"
"You're right. The fire I had has burnt out
Because that's not what this fight is about
I'm calm and I’m glad that I get to slay you
And reunite a father with his daughter too
If I'm confident and clear, I will have my way
How silly to be saved by such a cliché
And as I speak I see you lose your fire too
But I don't see it turning out so well for you"
Sheer force won’t do, a calm mind must preserve
And Silver's huge power now fails to unnerve
Isaac brings down his blade- Silver reaches to block
But his arm is severed- his eyes widen in shock
With composure, content, Isaac readies the coup de grace
But as he goes to swing, he finds his arm to be locked
Sloan’s frozen Isaac and Silver as well
When Isaac comes to, the demon’s been dispelled
The Grand Soul is gone, and there's no sign of Sloan
Isaac sets out to find out where he’s gone

I Feel Asleep
05:02
|

As dusk falls Isaac spots a light
A lantern-lit cabin cuts through the night
Through the window, quite a gripping sight
Begs him to observe before he indicts
With a smile and a tear on his face
Sloan removes the contents of his case
A little girl standing as still as a stone
Her outstretched arm holds a blade of its own
Sloan throws it aside and releases his spell
He looks relieved, but he doesn't look well
Ellie comes to- her dad holds her tight
And says "it worked! You'll be alright!"
Isaac learns what had drained Sloan's magic supply
He'd kept Ellie frozen, and now Isaac sees why
When Sloan asked who would help, Bristol became a mute city
His money wouldn't go far, but reward fares better than pity
He promised the Grand Soul, knowing Ellie needed it more
He did the only thing he could to see his child restored
And it seems that everything went exactly as he planned
The binding blade that laid Silver to waste was in Ellie's hand
"You're going to be sick for about seven days
But then the worst will pass, and you'll be okay"
She says she'll be fine as long as he's there too
"I wish that I could stay, but it's something I can't do"
She asks if she can come "I'm sorry Ellie, but no
I have to go somewhere no child should ever go"
"Will you see Mom there?" this idea wasn't new
"I really hope not- I'd rather her find you"
Sloan says he's sleepy now- he needs to lie down
Ellie lies with him- says she wants to hear "the sound"
She lies her head on her father's chest
She says that when she's sad his heart helps her to rest
"Your uncle" Says Sloan "will take care of you
He may be poor, but he'll do all he can do"
Ellie asks her dad when he will come back
"I don't think there's anyone who can answer that"
Sloan tells her he loves her, as he strokes her hair
"I always will, even when I can't be there"
Ellie returns the phrase- her little voice quivers
Sloan smiles through his pain and his shivers
A few minutes pass with the weight of days
Isaac hates what he sees, but he can’t break his gaze
Ellie lifts her head and looks back down, distressed
"The sound" has faded from her father's chest
Sloan was damned and bound
To leave the earth a shattered man
But he departs with a smile
Knowing he's done all that he can
Isaac hears footsteps in the distance
A man resembling Sloan draws near
Isaac leaves gifts at the door
All of Sloan's money and some extra gear
The saga over, Isaac's trek home begins
He doesn't entertain a single thought of might-have-been
Of course he ponders the web that fate has spun
But he never forgets that what’s done is done
Those that he wears proudly for all to see
Are tokens that represent victories
But those unseen or sung most surely are
The very deepest of his scars
